The Challenge
The African International Technical College (AITEC) website was a functional, yet static, digital presence. While it served as a repository of information, it failed to reflect the college's modern, innovative mission. My goal was to transform the website from a simple brochure into a powerful user acquisition tool, outperforming key competitors and engaging prospective students.
Problem Statement: How can a strategic redesign of the AITEC website improve user experience, increase student enrollment, and establish the brand as a leader in technical education in Kenya?
The original AITEC website, which served as the starting point for my redesign
My Role & Process
Role: UX/UI Designer, Product Strategist
Methodology: I followed a user-centric design process, from initial research to detailed design documentation.
Competitive Analysis: I first analyzed the digital presence of AITEC's top competitors (JKUAT, Strathmore, Zetech, MMU, Moringa School) to identify industry strengths, weaknesses, and digital opportunities.
Strategic Recommendations: Based on my findings, I developed a comprehensive strategy to address AITEC's core pain points in user experience, visual design, and content strategy.
Information Architecture & User Flows: I created a logical site structure to guide users seamlessly from discovery to conversion.
UI/UX Design & Prototyping: I designed a complete, high-fidelity mock-up of every key page, focusing on modern aesthetics and intuitive functionality.
Competitive Insights & Strategy
My analysis revealed a key opportunity: to create a website that blends the professionalism of Strathmore, the functional simplicity of MMU, and the community-building content of Zetech and Moringa School.
J.K.U.A.T.:
Insight: Information overload and fragmented user flows.
Strategy: Design a clean, intuitive information architecture to simplify navigation.
Strathmore:
Insight: Relies on manual, friction-filled processes.
Strategy: Implement a seamless, end-to-end online admissions portal.
Zetech & Moringa School:
Insight: Strong use of social proof and community content.
Strategy: Integrate compelling student testimonials and a dynamic blog to build trust and engagement.
Key Solutions & Design Breakdown
Here is a breakdown of the redesigned website, highlighting key UX/UI improvements and design choices.
Homepage
Goal: Capture attention and guide users to key actions.
Design: A bold, benefit-driven headline with a clear "Explore Programs" CTA to immediately engage the user. A grid of 3 cards visually representing AITEC's unique selling points. A filterable carousel of popular courses, organized by school. A dynamic section featuring compelling student testimonials and key data points on graduate success.
Courses Page
Goal: Simplify program discovery and reduce choice paralysis.
Design: A prominent search bar and a detailed filter panel (by School, Program Type, and Duration). Program cards with a high-quality image, concise details, and a direct link to the course page.
UX: This design directly addresses the "information overload" found on competitor sites, making it easy for users to find the perfect program
Admissions Page
Goal: Guide users through the application process with zero friction.
Design: A clear, horizontal, step-by-step guide with bold headlines and supporting text. The primary CTA "Start Your Application" leads to a simple, intuitive online form. An integrated FAQ section to preemptively answer common questions
Student Life Page
Goal: Build an emotional connection and showcase the community.
Design: A dynamic visual grid of authentic photos and videos from campus events and student activities. Sections on student clubs and support services.
